Windows Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE)
Redesigning Windows onboarding flows using inclusive patterns and progressive disclosure for millions of users globally.
Year: 2009 – 2010
Role: Lead UX Designer

Overview
As Windows Phone evolved, Microsoft needed a redesigned out-of-box experience (OOBE) that was simple, desirable, and scalable across devices. The goal was to guide users seamlessly through setup while balancing usability, personalization, and technical requirements for a global audience.
Process
I partnered closely with program managers and developers in working design sessions to define the future onboarding vision. My contributions included creating wireframes and prototypes that highlighted usability improvements, presenting actionable recommendations to refine the flow, and ensuring that accessibility remained core to the design. I collaborated with the user research team to test prototypes with early adopters and incorporated findings to improve clarity, efficiency, and overall satisfaction.
Impact
The redesigned OOBE became a foundation for Windows Phone, improving onboarding completion rates and user satisfaction. The structured process reduced friction for first-time users and introduced design practices that influenced subsequent Microsoft onboarding experiences.
